Termite Inspections & Why You Need them

The WDI (wood destroying insect) Inspection for settlement.

Common Question.

What will the Termite inspector look for when he performs my inspection?

The inspector will be inspecting for the presence of visible wood destroying insect evidence and damages.
There are FIVE Wood Destroying Insects (WDI) an inspector is required to look for when performing the WDI report for settlement.

The 5 Wood destroying insects.
• Termites
• Carpenter Ants
• Carpenter Bees
• Old House Borers - Wood Borers
• Powder Post Beetles

What are the typical visible signs of an infestation?

These are some of the infestations our inspectors have found this year.
TERMITE EVIDENCE
Termites live underground building mud shelter tubes to access and feed on wood. They will enter a home through any tiny crack or expansion joint. Heavy mulch, earth wood contact and excessive moisture or rotted wood are all conducive conditions. Termites feed on any cellulose material deriving their nutrition from the wood. Damaged Timber usually appears intact until probed.

CARPENTER ANT EVIDENCE
Carpenter ants do not eat wood but hollow it out to nest within the wood. They are typically attracted to moist or rotting wood but will also infest perfectly sound timbers.

CARPENTER BEE EVIDENCE
Carpenter Bees bore into wood cross grain creating a round entrance hole then turn with the grain and hollow out the wood building egg galleries within. The dime sized holes look as if they were drilled into the wood. Saw dust may be found below the timber. Sometimes woodpeckers will peck at the wood exposing the gallery while feeding on the eggs within.

WOOD BORERS
POWDER POST BEETLES and OLD HOUSE BORERS (WOOD BORERS) EVIDENCE
Wood borer beetles lay eggs in wood. They are attracted to moist wood and typically found in crawl space or attic timbers. The larvae causes the damage as they feed on the timber. The damaged gallery and exit holes may have a powdery frass. Eggs can remain dormant for several years then hatch when conditions are suitable. New homes may also have signs of infestation from infected timber at the lumber yard.

What happens after the inspection is performed?

Evidence of infestation found?

[X] Yes- If visible evidence of active infestation or damage is found the inspector will make recommendations for corrective measures based on the findings and required guidelines of the legal WDI certification report. Barrier includes a one year renewable termite guarantee on treatment work performed.

[X] No- If no evidence of Wood destroying insects were found the report will be issued noting no visible evidence of a wood destroying insect infestation was visible at the time of inspection. Due to the biology and behavior of termites Barrier includes a one year renewable termite treatment guarantee as a courtesy for our agents. The Termite guarantee is attached to the report at settlement and issued to the buyer for protection against future termite invasion or the possibility of hidden Termite infestation.

Benjamin Banneker Dog Park

Great Dog park. Fully fenced in. Has water and bowls there for your dogs and tables for you to sit at.

Waste bags are there but it is always better to bring your own. Over all very clean and nice. It is a dirt park so for us doggie parents I would recommend sneakers not flip flops in the summer unless you want dirty feel.

It has good amount of parking spaces. It is also very close to bike trail and major routes.

What I like most about This Dog Park is that it is very clean and dog owners do respect and clean after their dog.

Another big factor for me is, some dog parks are made of mulch and during rainy season, you just can't go there. It is always wet and muddy. At BB, floor is made of blue gravel and it makes it easier to drain and become dry after 30 min of any rain.

It could use more lights at night, but I course county says, parks are closed at dark.

After 5:00pm during summer time, park is fully under shade of the huge trees. This makes it very attractive during summer time.

This park belongs to Arlington County.

Homes in the immediate walking distance to the park range from $550K to $2M...It's easy access to 66 and 29 makes it commuters dream location, if you are commuting In and out of DC everyday.

Call me if you want your Dog to have a house close to Benjamin Banneker Park.

Washington and Old Dominion Bike Trail

I have been walking on these roads  past 3 years. I have lived and worked around the trail passage for 11 years, but only found out about it when I got our Husky. Naturally he demanded me to alter my daily routine and add long walks to my daily life. At first we started small walks if 1-2 miles. As the husky grew, his demand for longer walks also grew. On an average, we walk 7-12 miles every Saturday and Sunday.

We pass through beautiful trail passages of W&OD every weekend. Wild life of our own backyard is incredible. We have met with many wild life members of W&OD. Deers, foxes and rabbits and many other wild life can be found here. If you are a bird lover, you will be amazed how many different kinds of birds we have here.

I used to think that, people who owns properties on the passage of W&OD are very lucky. Well now, I can say, I think we are lucky!

During spring, W&OD becomes like a flower land. It is beautiful.
During month of July, along the bike trail you will find amazing blackberries.
You have got to see our Autumn.

W&OD is a 45 mile long trail that starts in the DC border and takes you through, Arlington, Falls Church, Dunn Loring, Vienna, Reston, Herndon and it goes all the way to Leesburg and beyond..

There are hidden gardens and tree locations that not many people know of. Some would come to these places to take of the trees. There are cherry trees, apple trees, walnut and some others..

In this picture with my husky, we are passing by idylwoid park. I used to play soccer in this field. Not the best field, but we had our first FC TURAN victory on this field for the first season.

W&OD used to be a first train rail tracks that connected DC to Virginia suburbs. After the railroad service was discontinued, Dominion Virginia Power bought the land to use it for its high voltage electric highways. Later Virginia Park Authority had gotten in an agreement with Dominion to have the trail.

At this point of our walk, we have walked around 3 miles. Map my walk helps me to track my walks and keep record of everything.

Year to date we have walked around 500 miles.

Around this time of our walk we get to meet Deers, Rabbits and foxes..

This is where you can park and start your trail adventure...

It is peaceful, it's serene, it's quite!

New home is being built on Westchester Dr ( not mine - I wouldn't have built 3 level giant on this beautiful quite Trail view)

Well I decided to blog about my walk today, hope you enjoyed it.

I love walking!

Keep walking, it will keep you health!
